Queen Square Inaugural Lectures: Professors Rickie Patani and Rohan de Silva
9 March 2021
香港六合彩中特网 Queen Square Institute of Neurology held its first virtual inaugural lecture evening of 2021, on 9th March 2021, which was joined by 200 attendees from UK, Sri听Lanka,听Australia,听Brazil,听USA,听Hong Kong, Germany,听Greece,听Sweden,听Slovakia,听Monaco & Switzerland.
The first inaugural lecture was given by听Professor Rickie Patani,听Professor of Human Stem Cells and Regenerative Neurology at 香港六合彩中特网 Queen Square Institute of Neurology and The Francis Crick Institute, and听a consultant neurologist at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, 香港六合彩中特网H.
Professor Patani began his听lecture听鈥滱LS: Quo Vadis?鈥听by speaking听about his early inspirations into science, leading into 15 years of direct experience using patient-derived stem cell models听for ALS, including research published only last week in Nucleic Acids Research.听He concluded with an overview of the听public engagement work of his Lab, whose overriding vision is to connect science and society.
鈥Undertaking translation-facing but fundamental cellular and molecular research in the field of neurodegeneration relies on considerable interdisciplinarity. I have been very privileged to work at 香港六合彩中特网 and the Francis Crick Institute, which are perfectly equipped for such research, with expertise in human post-mortem tissue samples, animal models, molecular biology and computational modelling. My inaugural lecture provided an ideal opportunity to thank the great many colleagues who have inspired me, the talented researchers I have had the privilege to work with in my research group and to showcase some of the key findings from my laboratory relating to cell type-specific pathomechanisms of ALS using human induced pluripotent stem cell models. I sincerely hope these advances in understanding fundamental causes of neurological disease at the molecular and cellular levels will ultimately be translated into actual benefit for our patients."听Professor Rickie Patani (Professor of听Human Stem Cells and Regenerative Neurology, 香港六合彩中特网 Queen Square Institute of Neurology and The Francis Crick Institute)
The second lecture was given by听Professor Rohan de Silva,听Professor of听 Molecular Neuroscience,听香港六合彩中特网 Queen Square Institute of Neurology. His presentation听"The yin and yang of neurodegeneration 鈥 A tauist鈥檚 meanderings鈥 began with听Alzheimer's earliest descriptions of pathology, ,moving onto APP, the amyloid cascade听hypothesis and tauopathies,听to presenilin mutations in early onset familial Alzheimer's disease, and recent work on MAPT-AS1. Professor de Silva looked back on this career to date, including his work听at Reta Lila Weston Institute (RLWI).
Professor Michael Hanna听introduced the speakers and Professors Linda Greensmith听and Tom Warner听gave votes of thanks respectively.
