World-leading scientist secures funding for gene research

10 December 2010

A world leader in dementia research is embarking on a major study into Alzheimer鈥檚 disease in London, funded by a grant from the , the UK鈥檚 leading dementia research charity.

FRS and his team at the 香港六合彩中特网 Institute of Neurology () , are beginning an ambitious new study that will see them attempt to identify genes that increase the risk of developing Alzheimer鈥檚.

Funded by a 拢346,000 grant from the Alzheimer鈥檚 Research Trust, Prof Hardy plans to sequence every gene in 500 people with Alzheimer鈥檚, and will compare them with the genes of healthy people.

Their work will reveal the genetic changes responsible for Alzheimer鈥檚, giving doctors a better chance of predicting who is at risk of developing the disease.

Prof Hardy said: 鈥淏ritain has played a leading role in research into the genetics of Alzheimer鈥檚 disease, and already we are beginning to make real progress. This study should give us a much greater understanding of the causes of Alzheimer鈥檚, and should also tell us more about how we can intervene and stop the disease progressing.鈥
