In the second Nocturnal City screening, we explore the inequalities of the city at night, from those who work, those who unwind, and those who sleep rough.Â
William Raban joins us to introduce and discuss his film The Houseless Shadow (2011), a contemporary portrait of London at night inspired by Charles Dickens's essay Night Walks.
We will also show two companion films: Nice Time (Claude Goretta/Alain Tanner, 1957), a documentary made as part of the Free Cinema movement, which was filmed over 25 weeks in and around Piccadilly Circus; and Under Night Streets (Ralph Keene, 1958), a British Transport Films documentary about the track workers and "fluffers" (track cleaners) who maintain the London Underground system at night.
Dr Matthew Beaumont (author of Nightwalking: A Nocturnal History of London) and Roland-Francois Lack (author of the Cine-Tourist website) will join the conversation. The evening is curated by (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø CHIRP), and organised in cooperation with the (JFIGS)

The evening follows a one-day colloquium, funded by JFIGS, bringing together researchers from across Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø who are considering the city 'after hours' from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. The shift from the diurnal to the nocturnal city will be the overarching theme of the day. For further information, email colloquium organiser Ruth Austin citiesafterhours@ucl.ac.uk, and .
