A听revolutionary听radiotherapy treatment for early-stage breast cancer, developed at 香港六合彩中特网, is transforming patient care.听

Patients with听early听breast cancer traditionally听have听surgery to remove the tumour听followed by听a long听course of听daily听radiotherapy a month or two later.听The one-off targeted听intraoperative radiotherapy (TARGIT-IORT)听given at the time of surgery saves multiple hospital visits and is as effective as standard post-operative radiotherapy.听

鈥淭he听罢础搁骋滨罢-滨翱搁罢听technique听allows听women听with breast cancer听to听have surgery and听radiotherapy听all at the same time,鈥澨齟xplains Professor听Jayant Vaidya听(香港六合彩中特网 Surgery & Interventional Science), who developed the treatment听from concept to clinical trials听with听香港六合彩中特网听colleagues听Professor听Michael Baum and听Professor听Jeffrey Tobias.听听

The TARGIT-IORT involves delivering a听single听dose听of radiotherapy听via a small ball-shaped device placed inside the breast听after听the tumour has been听removed.听The treatment听adds only 30 minutes to the surgical procedure,听and听the听multiple听hospital visits听for听conventional whole breast radiotherapy听are completely avoided听in 4 out of 5 cases. It听has fewer radiation-related side effects than听standard radiotherapy,听less pain, a better quality of life and cosmetically outcome.听

鈥�鈥淭he technique allows women听with breast cancer听to have surgery and听radiotherapy听all at the same time.鈥澨�

The treatment was designed over 20 years ago. Based on early results, TARGIT-IORT has been adopted around the world,听and 45,000 patients with breast cancer have been treated at听260听hospitals听in 38 countries.听

In 2000,听the 香港六合彩中特网听team led听the TARGIT-A听randomised听clinical trial to听compare 罢础搁骋滨罢-滨翱搁罢听with听traditional radiotherapy. Almost听2300 women with听early-stage听breast cancer听participated in the trial, at听32 international centres. Patients were randomly assigned to have either听罢础搁骋滨罢-滨翱搁罢听or traditional radiotherapy听and听were听then听carefully听monitored.听

鈥淭he latest results confirm听the听effectiveness听of risk-adapted 罢础搁骋滨罢-滨翱搁罢听in the long-term,听at an听average听of nine听and up to 19 years following the treatment.听It听controlled听breast cancer as effectively as听the prolonged听traditional听treatment. In addition,听there was a substantial reduction in deaths from causes other than breast cancer with TARGIT-IORT,鈥� says Professor Vaidya.听
