Providing art workshops for schoolchildren in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya

A 香港六合彩中特网 artist has set up a programme of practical art workshops for schoolchildren in a Kenyan refugee camp 鈥 and is continuing to run it using mobile phones throughout the global pandemic.

In April 2019, Professor Lisa Milroy led a three-day workshop for 35 students from Angelina Jolie Primary School, Morneau Shepell Secondary School for Girls and Our Lady鈥檚 Girl Secondary School in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya. The students worked together to create 鈥淕roup Portrait鈥, a marvelous collaborative painting.

Kakuma Refugee Camp, located in north-west Kenya, is home to听more than听190,000 refugees听of听21听different听nationalities. There are over 108,000 children living in the camp, including more than 90,000 primary and secondary school-aged children. There are 26 primary schools and seven secondary schools in Kakuma Refugee Camp.听听

Since听2015, Professor Lisa Milroy听(香港六合彩中特网 Slade听School听of Fine Art)听has been delivering听鈥楬ands听On听Art听Workshops鈥櫶齠or听schoolchildren听though interactive video conference.听听

鈥淭he听workshops听are designed听to听open up and听facilitate听dialogue and creative exchange between artists and students in Kakuma Refugee Camp,鈥澨齈rofessor Milroy听explains. 鈥淪tudents are encouraged to develop their imaginative thinking and creative skills through the workshops, engaging with听drawing, painting, performance, object-making, writing and aspects of functional design.鈥澨

The closure of schools in Kakuma Refugee Camp during the Covid-19 pandemic brought Professor Milroy鈥檚 art workshop sessions听using听video conferencing听to a halt. However,听liaising with听colleagues听in Kakuma听Refugee Camp,听she听was able to connect with some of the students and deliver the workshops using mobile phones.听

鈥淭he practical art听workshops听are designed to听open up and听facilitate dialogue and creative exchange between artists and students in Kakuma Refugee Camp.鈥澨

During this time,听Professor Milroy听has been sending听art听workshop guidelines to听Madam听Sabella Muthoni, Headmistress at Angelina Jolie Primary School,听using听WhatsApp, which Madam听Muthoni then听relays听to students through mobile phone messaging. Madam听Muthoni听sends听photos of听the students鈥櫶齛rtwork back to听Professor Milroy听for feedback and support.听听

Working with Joy听Maraka, Education Assistant UNHCR Kakuma, they also听used mobile phones to听organise a submission of artwork from six students and a professional artist in听the听camp to the UNHCR's听global 鈥榊outh with Refugees鈥櫶鼳rt Contest.听

Each year, Professor Milroy travels to听the听camp to听meet听with听students, teachers and artists,听working with UNHCR Kakuma.听Due to COVID-19, her听planned听mission听visit听in April 2020, supported by听a grant from the 香港六合彩中特网 Global Engagement Fund, was postponed until 2021.听

She also recently raised听funds听generated through her professional practice听for a second Hands听On听Art Workshops Scholarship, the first of which she听set up in 2019. The scholarship will cover the full cost of four years of secondary school tuition for a听鈥楬ands On鈥櫶齭tudent.听听
