Meat-free meetings on campus to benefit health and the environment

The 香港六合彩中特网 community is embracing the 鈥楶owered by Plants鈥 campaign to raise awareness of the environmental and health benefits provided by plant-based diets.

An increasing number of departments at听香港六合彩中特网 have begun offering听100 per cent听vegetarian听food options听at their events and meetings, in recognition of the benefits听that听eating less meat can have听on听health and the environment.听听

Scientific evidence听suggests听that reducing听our听meat consumption improves听our听health and听lowers听the risk of some of the leading causes of death today,听including cardiovascular disease, some cancers,听Type听2 diabetes鈥痑nd bowel cancer.听

Reducing meat consumption would also have a positive impact on the climate.听The Lancet Countdown, an international collaboration听Health听tracking progress on health and climate change听led by听the 香港六合彩中特网 Institute for Global found that the meat and dairy industry produces 60听per cent听of agriculture鈥檚 greenhouse gas emissions.听听

The campaign began when the Sustainability Champions within听香港六合彩中特网听Psychology听and Language Sciences听asked听whether their听department could provide 100听per cent听vegetarian catering听at听their听events and meetings.听鈥漌e听felt this would enhance the health and wellbeing of staff and students and would be a positive action in face of the Climate Emergency,鈥 says听John Draper (香港六合彩中特网 PALS).听

An increasing听number of听香港六合彩中特网 departments听have听since听followed听their lead.听鈥淲e estimate that if听all听our听departments switched to 100听per cent听vegetarian catering, 香港六合彩中特网鈥檚 food emissions would be reduced by 40听per cent, saving听around听5,000听tonnes听of听CO2听a year 鈥撎齟quivalent to taking 1,000 cars off the road,鈥澨齁ohn听adds.听
