香港六合彩中特网 staff and students are encouraging secondary school students to develop their understanding of sustainability issues and develop devices to solve them.

SDG Case Study G13 PPLPWR

7 October 2020

Josh Bailey, a听postdoctoral research fellow听in 香港六合彩中特网 Chemical Engineering, and听Rebecca Shutt, a听PhD student听in 香港六合彩中特网 Physics & Astronomy,听worked together on听a series of workshops to听bring engineering into听disadvantaged听secondary schools in听East听London, while raising awareness of听sustainability听issues and technologies.听听

The workshops were part of a听year-long project听that was听funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and听organised by PPL PWR, a voluntary organisation听dedicated to growing and empowering a community that cares about sustainable futures. PPL PWR听began as a student-led initiative at 香港六合彩中特网听that听Josh听co-founded听during听his PhD听at 香港六合彩中特网.听

鈥淭he听students attended听hands-on workshops on听renewable energies and energy storage technologies,鈥 explains Becky, who听challenged听them听to work out the energy and power output of Mo Farah and Usain Bolt, and to make the battery with the highest voltage from common household food stuffs.听听

Students were听then听asked to听design听devices to solve the sustainability issues faced by听different individuals in a variety of settings, such as a commuter in an air-polluted city, or a farmer in an arid climate.听鈥淭hey employed junk-modelling听in the design process before using various materials and components to produce听a physical version of听their听design.听During听the workshops,听the students designed听an air-humidity condenser using听solar panels and听thermoelectrics, as well as an energy-harvesting听lamppost, employing hydroelectric turbines and battery storage.听听
