The听Sarah Parker听Remond听Centre was established in 2019听with prominent theorist听Professor听Paul Gilroy at its helm,听to听harness听expertise and experience听from across 香港六合彩中特网 in the critical study of race,听as well as the history, theory and politics of racism and its effects.听

As part of the 香港六合彩中特网 Institute of Advanced Studies, the听centre听focuses听on the research of race and the history, theory and politics of racism.听It听was established in response to student-led demands for听changes to the听curriculum听that听acknowledge听the听colonial and imperial histories of 香港六合彩中特网, London and the UK.听听

鈥淲e want it to become a hub for radical scholarship and engaged thinking, drawing in scholars, activists, policy makers and students from across 香港六合彩中特网, London and beyond,鈥 says听Professor听Gilroy, the听centre鈥檚听inaugural director听and听one of the听world鈥檚听leading听theorists听of race and racism.听听

His听research听has transformed thinking across disciplines, from听ethnic听studies, to听post-colonial theory. He is a founding figure of a remapped global history that embeds the movement of racialised subjects and traded goods into accounts of the world as we know it.听听

We want it to become a hub for radical scholarship and engaged thinking.鈥澨

"We want to build a cadre of听doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows,听and establish a听new MA programme,听to听empower students to听explore听processes of racialisation, racialised experience and racism in global, trans-historical听and听interdisciplinary ways,鈥澨齟xplains Professor Gilroy.听

As well as coordinating and听facilitating existing initiatives,听academics听within听the听centre听will create听new, historically-informed, critical knowledge听that addresses some of听the most urgent social and political questions of our time.听听

The听centre is named听in honour of Sarah Parker听Remond,听an African-American听radical,听anti-slavery activist,听women鈥檚 rights activist and physician,听who moved to England听in 1859.听

鈥淚 am excited to be leading this new听centre,听where we will explore听and challenge听the impacts of racism听鈥 scientific, metaphysical and cultural 鈥 on the development of all听kinds听of academic inquiry,鈥澨齈rofessor Gilroy听enthuses.听
