Taking part online

18 November 2020

香港六合彩中特网 has adopted a Connected Learning approach for these physically distanced times; most teaching is taking place online but continues to be an active and collaborative experience.

To be an effective online learner聽you need to do more than just listen, read and watch, you鈥檒l need to participate as well.聽If you are new to online learning, taking part in discussions and live classes can be a bit daunting but once you start to feel comfortable there are lots of benefits to working in this way.聽Participating gives you to the opportunity to:聽聽

  • Develop your聽ideas.聽
  • 础蝉办听辩耻别蝉迟颈辞苍蝉.听
  • Get to know your聽classmates.聽
  • Reflect on what you鈥檙e learning from a personal, rather than academic or critical, perspective.聽

Taking part looks different depending on the kind of activity聽and 香港六合彩中特网 doesn鈥檛 require you to do anything you aren鈥檛 comfortable with, such as turning on your camera in live聽classes.聽In this post we provide some basic guidance around how to participate in each type.聽

General guidelines for taking part in聽online learning聽

Some online behaviours are relevant regardless of the type of learning activity. Below are some guidelines for verbal and written online communication that will benefit everyone.聽

  • Be respectful of your classmates and treat them as politely as you would in a classroom.聽
  • Be constructive in your responses. Instead of saying 鈥淚 agree鈥, try to say why you agree or disagree.聽
  • Thank, acknowledge and support others. If you see something from a classmate without a response, try to answer them!聽
  • Think about your language and pause if you need to. Your communication should be clear, informative and to the point. Use聽descriptive聽titles for your posts so it is clear what they are about.聽聽
  • Use open-ended questions to聽keep聽conversations聽going聽and form relationships with others.聽
  • Don鈥檛 give out any personal information that you wouldn鈥檛 ordinarily share with someone you don鈥檛 know.聽聽

Taking part in聽asynchronous online discussions聽

Asynchronous discussions will聽usually聽take place in Moodle discussion forums in your module and programme course spaces. Your tutors may have set up topics for聽discussion聽already聽or聽may add these as the module progresses.聽聽

How you contribute and respond to others in聽discussions online is obviously different to being in a classroom. Forums聽mean聽you聽don鈥檛 have聽to be in the same place at the same time, which you can聽use to your advantage:聽

  • Take your time to formulate your responses and prepare your arguments carefully.聽
  • Gather additional material that supports what you鈥檙e saying or provides an example of a concept in the real world, such as further literature or a news article.聽
  • Return to discussions at your convenience to refresh your memory.聽

Discussion at聽香港六合彩中特网聽should be challenging but fun, and any comment or response you give should be clear, friendly, and open in the sense that you must respect different thoughts and perspectives.聽聽

Feel free to disagree 鈥撀爕ou might even change someone鈥檚 mind! But write with care, courtesy, evidence and thought.聽聽

Avoid personal comments and focus on challenging ideas expressed rather than the individual themselves.聽聽

Taking part in聽live online classes聽

Live classes give you a chance to get to know your tutor and classmates, and if everyone聽gets聽involved,聽you should quickly get a feel for who you might like to work with in pairs or form a study group with.聽

Get ready for your class:聽聽

  • Set a calendar reminder for the date and time of the class.聽
  • Try to join from a location where you won鈥檛 be interrupted or at least hear well,聽e.g.,聽with headphones.聽
  • Complete any preparatory reading or activities, and note down any comments, reflections, or questions you might like to ask in advance.聽

Beyond the basics, taking an active role in a class improves聽your own learning experience and that of your peers. The greater the contribution you make to a discussion, the more feedback you will receive on your ideas. Receiving more feedback will likely mean you are better prepared for you assessment.聽聽

Whether your class takes place in Collaborate, Zoom, or Teams, you will typically be able to share audio, video, and write in a chat area. You should always try to contribute to conversation taking place in the chat area;聽consider uploading a photo or avatar to your profile;聽and complete any learning activities set by your tutor, but using your camera is completely optional.聽聽

Your tutor may set聽other聽ground rules around when and how you can contribute to ensure everyone gets their turn. It is generally good practice to use a raise hand function and remain muted until you are invited to speak to minimise background noise.聽

If you'd like to use聽the microphone or a camera but聽you鈥檙e聽not聽feeling confident, consider working your way up to it! Get familiar with using the chat and any reaction tools like emojis,聽before gradually increasing how often you聽use audio-visual tools聽鈥撀爐ry using a聽question you prepared before聽class,聽so you don鈥檛 feel pressure to come up with something聽on the spot.聽
