18 November 2020

While we physically distance ourselves from one another, 香港六合彩中特网 has adopted a Connected Learning approach, where most teaching takes place online, but your learning continues to be active and collaborative.

Asynchronous聽materials are聽learning resources provided for you to use or complete at a time that suits聽you, for as long as you like.聽Your academic team provide asynchronous content聽so you can make the most of live sessions聽with them; you can consult聽this material聽in advance聽of a session聽so you are ready to ask聽any questions, or聽you might聽follow-up on a tutorial聽or workshop聽by completing activities that check your understanding of the material covered in聽that聽session.聽聽

Although a lot of the academic material you would access during a normal year,聽e.g.聽books and journal articles, is 鈥榓synchronous鈥,聽there will be a greater variety available聽this year, such as video聽alternatives to live lectures.聽聽

Here,聽we鈥檒l聽explore some of the basic ways you can聽get the most聽from this material.聽

Taking notes聽

However聽you鈥檙e taught this year, taking effective notes is an important and fundamental academic skill. Throughout your studies,聽you'll聽be reminded to "write with the reader in mind". When you're taking notes,聽you聽are that reader!聽

Taking notes should help you to:聽

  • Improve or refresh your understanding as you put new concepts and ideas into your own聽words.聽
  • Condense knowledge into something you can easily revisit later.聽
  • Support you during your revision.聽

If your notes are confusing to navigate or missing key information, you鈥檒l have to work a lot harder to get back on聽track.聽聽

The aim is not to write down everything聽鈥 your notes should聽briefly and succinctly record your understanding of,聽and perspectives on a topic.聽聽

There are some highly structured approaches to taking notes at university, such as the聽Cornell note-taking system,聽in which you take notes, summarise what was covered and develop a series of key points or questions that act as a study guide to聽refer聽to.聽

Other ways to take notes include聽mind-maps, line diagrams, or clusters of ideas,聽in which basic information is noted down and can be followed up or expanded upon聽later. These kinds of note-taking methods can be performed by hand or聽using聽digital聽tools.聽

Learning from video聽

Learning from video聽brings many advantages. Taking notes from a live speaker can be challenging, but with a video you can revisit a point as many times as you need聽to, and聽move at your own pace聽when taking notes.聽聽

Remember, note-taking isn鈥檛 about creating a personal transcript of聽the full recording. In most cases you should find that a transcript is available, and your聽note-taking聽can really focus on improving your understanding of the topic.聽

When watching a video, try to:聽

  1. Pick a note-taking technique and stick to it!聽
  2. Choose a time and place where you can concentrate and listen without being interrupted.聽
  3. Get used to listening carefully and watch out for signposting language from the speaker:聽statements like 鈥淚 will now demonstrate three ways that...鈥. These can flag significant points to note down.聽
  4. Be active and make decisions about what it is and isn鈥檛 important to add to your notes.聽
  5. Consider watching a video once, taking notes, and revisiting the next day while it鈥檚 fresh in your memory. Getting some rest between viewings means you鈥檒l have time to incorporate the main points into your long-term memory and you鈥檒l know what points to pay attention to in a second viewing.聽
  6. Where possible, turn on captions and/or read the transcript provided. Reading and listening can aid understanding and remembering content.聽
  7. Ask yourself whether you would be able to use your notes to explain the main points of the video to a person who has not seen it.聽

Overall, try to limit the amount of time you spend watching videos. Aim for a maximum of 12 鈥 15 minutes. Your attention span will probably start to flag after about 10 minutes,聽so watching a video for longer than that may not be productive. At the same time, while you can rewind and revisit key points, don鈥檛 do this too much as it can take up a lot of your time.聽

Working through asynchronous exercises聽

Alongside聽material like journal articles, book chapters, and videos, there may be a range of asynchronous activities to complete as part of your core learning each week.聽聽

These might be multiple choice quizzes, open questions that you complete by yourself or聽discussion forum聽tasks with your peers. The purpose of these is to activate and deepen your understanding of the material explored as part of that topic. Completing them can also better prepare you for any live classes and help develop learning relationships between you and your classmates.聽
