A new research group called has been set up by Tim Beasley-Murray (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø SSEES), Prof Axel Körner (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø History), Dr Uta Staiger (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø European Institute), Dr Dina Gusejnova (Queen Mary) and the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Centre for Transnational History.

As part of the project, the group will convene an informal reading group on the subject. The first meeting will be on 18 November 2014 at 5.45pm . All are warmly invited to join on this occasion, or for future meetings. The group would also like to act as a mediator for related events based at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø and beyond.

The first text for discussion will be Martha Nussbaum's Political Emotions (Harvard UP, 2013), with a particular focus on chapters 10 and 11 dealing with compassion’s enemies and public emotions. The discussion will invite critical engagement with this work.
