St. Serafim of Sarov (1754鈥�1833) was an ascetic monk famed for his eremitic life in the forests and his spiritual eldership to Russia鈥檚 Orthodox pilgrims. He was a symbol of popular piety, canonised in controversial circumstances in 1903. This presentation explores Chapter One of Peter鈥檚 PhD dissertation, which argues that Serafim鈥檚 elevation to sainthood was the result of Russia鈥檚 lay peasantry and tsar Nicholas II鈥檚 shared desire for 鈥榓uthentic鈥�, traditional Orthodoxy. It will examine the challenges in tackling the material for this Chapter and the significance of Serafim鈥檚 reception.

About the Speaker
Peter Flew

After almost a decade working as a lawyer for Russian companies, Peter resumed his academic Russian studies. His MPhil (Bristol) studied the early Lives of Serafim produced in the 1840s. His PhD research focusses on the reception of Serafim by creative intellectuals and clerical figures in late imperial and early revolutionary Russia. He is supervised by Prof Simon Dixon and Prof Pamela Davidson.
