Overview

This two-day masterclass provides an in-depth update on the current scientific understanding of auditory processing disorders (APD), language, cognition and their interaction across the age spectrum.

You'll learn about:

• the scientific principles of auditory neuroscience
• current clinical diagnostic and management approaches for auditory processing disorders

This is a multidisciplinary course, taught by clinician researchers and auditory neuroscience academic researchers. .

You should have some basic knowledge in audiology.

Course content

The course covers a wide range of topics including:

• the anatomy and physiology of the peripheral and central auditory pathways
• the definition of auditory processing disorders (APD) and controversies
• clinical presentations of APD in adults and children and the interplay of auditory processing, cognition and language
• diagnostic considerations for APD including its differential diagnosis from auditory neuropathy spectrum disorders, developmental and/or cognitive disorders
• current test batteries for assessment of different cohorts of patients with APD (e.g. the child with developmental disorders; dementia paitents)
• mulitdisciplinary management of individuals with APD and with or without other hearing impairment, cognitive or developmental disorders in adults and children with APD
• research tests in development 
• electrophysiological tests for auditory processing
• using auditory devices and training programmes in the management of APD

Teaching and structure

The course will run over two consecutive days. Seminar style, interactive teaching is supplemented by:

• Group exercises and class discussion
• Case studies
• Self-directed reading and pre-reading around current structure and practice in auditory processing disorder services

The course is led by Professor Doris Bamiou and Dr Peter Keating, with lectures and seminars from experienced academics and clinicians. All materials will be available via the dedicated course page on Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Extend. 

Certificates and accreditation

You'll receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of this course.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Obtain a history of individuals suspected of APD
• Choose effective tests and other assessment strategies for individuals suspected of APD
• Consider differential diagnoses and recognise the need for multidisciplinary assessment 
• Formulate a management approach for APD
• Recognise current limitations and controversies in the field of APD

The standard course fee is £690.

Cancellations

If you wish to cancel your order for a course after it is accepted by us and outside of any period in which you might have a right to cancel, then the following applies.

Your cancellation must be received in writing no later than 14 days before the start of the Course. If we receive your cancellation no later than 14 days before the start of the Course we will refund any amount you have paid to us for that Course less an administration charge of 20%. No refunds will be made for cancellations made by you within 14 days of the Course date.

Course team

Professor Doris-Eva Bamiou

Doris-Eva is Professor in Neuroaudiology at the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Ear Institute. She's also an Honorary Consultant in Audiological Medicine at the University College London Hospitals and Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she runs adult and paediatric APD clinics. She researches APD in neurological populations, efficacy of auditory training, and listening devices management for APD in children and adults. She's been Director and Organiser of Auditory Processing Disorders instructional courses since 2001.

Dr Peter Keating

Peter is a Senior Research Associate at the Ear Institute. He obtained a BA in Psychology and Philosophy from Trinity College, Dublin before moving to the University of Oxford to do an MSc in Neuroscience. He subsequently completed a DPhil in Physiology as a Newton Abraham scholar in the Oxford Auditory Neuroscience Group, where he also pursued postdoctoral research.
