About Us

The Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Department of Risk and Disaster Reduction (RDR) inspires innovation and evidence-based practice focused on improving disaster risk reduction (DRR) through our research, education, and partnerships. This creates a better life for many people by reducing the negative impacts of disasters

The RDR is an exciting cross-Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø department, which leads research, knowledge, education and humanitarian action. By providing a focus for Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø activities, with its breadth of disciplinary emphasis, promotion of novel multidisciplinary research and translation into practice, the IRDR aims to assume a role of leadership both in the UK and internationally. The department is in the Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences (MAPS), but works across all Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø's faculties, spanning natural and social sciences, mathematics and statistics, engineering and development planning, global health, anthropology, the humanities, ethics and laws, and contributes to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø's Grand Challenges.

Humanitarian Institute

We launched the Humanitarian Institute in 2016, aiming to mobilise Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø’s research, expertise, teaching and the student body to impact global humanitarian challenges and to promote education for global citizenship and the connected curriculum at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø as part of the Provost'sÌýStrategic Development initiative.

These are ambitious tasks and as partÌýof theÌýÏã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Grand Challenges weÌýaspire to the vision of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø in 2034, for creating a global university champion for the UK in humanitarian response and disaster risk reduction.
