Abstract

This presentation discusses results from a study aimed at understanding how adolescents perceive, interpret, and experience answering questions on child abuse and neglect. Using cognitive interviews and arts-based methods, it explores meanings and interpretations assigned by adolescents in Romania, South Africa, and the Philippines to a self-report measure on child abuse and neglect. It discusses implications for measuring child abuse and neglect and conducting research with adolescents on this topic.

Biography

Lakshmi Neelakantan recently completed a PhD at the Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh. Her PhD research explored the experiences of adolescents with regards to answering questions on the ISPCAN's Child Abuse Screening Tools in multiple contexts, namely Romania, South Africa, and the Philippines. This research may be used for the development and cross-cultural adaptation of self-report child abuse measures.ÌýLakshmi holds an MSc in Evidence-based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation from the University of Oxford where she studied as a Chevening scholar. She also holds dual bachelor's degrees in Law and Liberal Arts from the National Law University, Jodhpur (India).Ìý
