About the project

Between April 2020 - March 2021, a small group of postgraduate students at the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍøÌýPsychoanalysis Unit were inspired by reports of a surge in vivid dreams to collect Lockdown Dreams as a record of the emotional vicissitudes of an unsettling and unprecedented global pandemic. More than 500 dreams were submitted by the public from across the world, inspiring this series of animations, as well as an ongoing research project.

The filmsÌýwere written, directed, and produced by Liz Allison, Angela Barrett, Zara Haghpanah-Shirwan and Vanshikaa Savla. Illustration is by Connie Noble, and sound by Tobias Withers. Funding was generously provided by Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing (PEP).

‘Being involved with this public engagement project, originally conceived by a group of the Psychoanalysis Unit’s MSc students, has been a moving and inspiring experience and I hope the films will stimulate people’s curiosity about what Freud called ‘that mostÌýmarvellous and most mysteriousÌýof all instruments’ – the human mind.’

Liz Allison, Director of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø’s Psychoanalysis Unit and Programme Director of the MSc in Theoretical Psychoanalytic Studies

‘The way dreams are described as helping our minds to work through what is overwhelming us was Freud’s great insight, and these animations bring this to light in a creative and illuminating way.’

David Tuckett, CEO of PEP and Professor Emeritus at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø

‘PEP has funded these delightful films as they are in a form that introduces people outside psychoanalysis to psychoanalytic ideas and contemporary conversations.’

Nadine Levinson, PEP Executive DirectorÌý

‘This animation project engages in the modern idiom of mixed media/animation/video while continuing to maintain the rigorÌýof the field of psychoanalysis.’

Garrick Duckler, PEP Board Member

LockdownÌýDreams was led by Zara Haghpanah-Shirwan and JakeÌýRoberts.
