Key information

What are halls of residence? Should I live in one?

Halls of residence are a convenient way of finding a place to live as a student.ÌýThey are usually just calledÌý"halls" in the UK, andÌýasÌýdormitories or hostels in other countries. Not all of the residences we included are technically halls (e.g. all-studio residences), but that is what we shall call them for consistency. AÌýgrowingÌýrange of options isÌýavailable in London from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø, the University of London intercollegiate system (UoL), and private companies.

Inclusion in the is not a recommendation from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø. Unless otherwise indicated, we have no relationship with the organisation.

Normally you rent a room orÌýstudioÌýwith access to shared facilities. Apartments within privately runÌýstudent accommodation buildingsÌýare also becoming more common.Ìý

Location, size, and amenities vary and affect pricing. At Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø alone there are around a hundred different price points. Some private halls are small and utilitarian, others have on-site gyms, swimming pools, and cinema rooms.

The main advantage is convenience. You don’t need to find people to share with. You don't need to pay separate utility bills. You don’t need to undertake a viewing in person – photos and other media should be accurate, and most will have Google and other reviews. You can use Street View outsideÌýand, in many cases, inside the hall too. Most have on-site security. Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø halls usually have .

The and the can provideÌýsupport and advice, including contract checking and help with disputes.

Availability and applications

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø and UoL intercollegiate halls are allocated on a rolling basis between April and August. You should apply directly from the website. Some halls or room types are not open to all students, e.g. postgraduates or under-18s.Ìý

Private halls are available to book directly from the provider throughout the year. TheÌýcheapest rooms tend to becomeÌýscarce by the spring.

Prices and availability

The rooms and prices on the map may no longerÌýbe available, depending on when you are viewing this page. Prices areÌýareÌýindicative and based on public listings in MarchÌý2024 for rooms and studios (unless a one-bedroom apartment was the only option for postgraduate students – at some Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø halls).Ìý

For applications to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø and UoLÌýhalls, your budget is taken into account, but a specific roomÌýor hall isÌýnot guaranteed.ÌýThe respective websites include the number of rooms available at each hall and price point. Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø has a relatively small number of twin rooms at our lowest price point, for example. We recommend that you do not budgetÌýfor the cheapest option in advance of receiving an offer of accommodation.

At private halls, cheaperÌýrooms usually become fully bookedÌýearlier than larger, more expensive rooms, studios, and apartments. This can be as early as MarchÌýfor a September start.Ìý
