20 March 2019

In response to the changing culture around smoking and a wider acceptance in the community of the hazards of smoking and the importance of protecting the health of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø community, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø is proposing a new smoking policy under the rubric ‘Smoke-Free Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø’.

Smoke Free Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø

To promote the health and wellbeing of its staff, students, contractors and visitors, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø currently operates a no smoking policy which bans smoking or being in possession of lit cigarettes, cigars or pipes in any premises occupied or used by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø staff, students and visitors, or in Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø vehicles. This extends to areas immediately outside the entrances or open windows of any such premises. The ban also includes use of e-cigarettes.

This policy has two key components:

  1. Extending the area in which smoking and use of e-cigarettes is not permitted to the whole of the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø estate including all public spaces and outdoor spaces.
  2. Providing high quality information and support for staff and students at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø who smoke to help them quit.

It is planned to implement Smoke-Free Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø from the start of the next academic year. We are now consulting the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø community on the proposal so that it meets our needs and accords with our values.
