From Austen to French cinema: Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø celebrates the arts

Join Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø in a ten-day celebration of the arts that will give the public a chance to experience, explore and engage with the latest research.

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Festival of the Arts

Running from 7 - 17 May, the festival includes film screenings, lectures, debates and exhibitions highlighting the breadth and depth of the work which takes place across the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø faculties of Arts & Humanities and Social & Historical Sciences.

The festival also includes 'Something Else for the Weekend', which gives festival-goers the chance to get up close and personal with Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø research with four days of participatory, hands-on activities. Themes for the programme include: seeing the city through foreign eyes, crime fiction, art and anatomy and fairy tales.Ìý

Over 40 free events will take place on the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Bloomsbury Campus, including highlights such as:

  • 'A Jane Austen Quiz', which sees Professor John Mullan (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø English) invite members of the audience to answer quiz questions on Austen's fiction, leading to the unravelling of some of her cleverest tricks and puzzles.ÌýMay 15, from 6.30 - 7.30pm
  • 'Chronique d'un Été', the first ever UK screening of the remastered, digital version of the original film, released last year by the Comite de Film Ethnographique and this year in England by the BFI.ÌýMay 7, from 6.30 - 9.30pm
  • 'Risk, Safety and the Price of Life', a lecture from Professor Jonathan Wolff (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Philosophy), exploring how many aspects of ordinary life, such as work and transport, pose small risks of death to people who use machinery or services and some of the thorny moral issues involved.ÌýMay 8, from 1-2pm
  • 'Self-Exposed: The Intensity & Variety of Self-Portraiture', in which artist Liz Rideal (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Slade School of Fine Art) examines the artist as model is constantly available but forever mutable and focuses on some eminent Slade School of Fine Art alumni.ÌýMay 9, from 6.30 - 7.30pm

A variety of other high-profile speakers, lecturers and public figures are set to participate in events, including artists Susan Collins and Jo Volley (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Slade School of Fine Art), poet Mark Ford (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø English Language & Literature), Professor John Dickie (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Italian), Dr Peter Swaab (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø English Language & Literature), Professor Iwan Morgan (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Institute of the Americas) and Professor Mary Fulbrook (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø German).
