18 July 2012

On 9 July, in the spirit of the Yale/Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Collaboration, alumni volunteers, staff and students who are involved in organising Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø alumni activity welcomed a delegation of more than 30 alumni volunteers from Yale University.

The volunteers were visiting Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø as part of the Yale Global Alumni Leadership Exchange (YaleGALE).

YaleGALE is an initiative of the Association of Yale Alumni that seeks to promote the value of education through alumni engagement and leadership. It fosters rich cultural understanding among participating universities and shares best practice in alumni relations across institutions.

The day began with Yale and Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø attendees getting to know one another over lunch in the Cissy Chu Common Room (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Faculty of Laws), followed by student-led tours of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø's campus, with the Yale participants particularly intrigued by Jeremy Bentham's Auto-Icon.Ìý

The afternoon's Alumni Ideas Exchange included a speed-sharing session, with Yale and Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø participants swapping ideas on how to attract more alumni to engage with their respective university programmes.

Prior to a dinner in the Jeremy Bentham Room, the Yale delegation heard from Professor Michael Worton, Vice-Provost (International) about Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø's International Strategy and Professor John Martin on the genesis and vision of the Yale/Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Collaborative.

Professor Martin commented: "The YaleGALE visit is a genuine manifestation of what the Yale/Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Collaboration is all about, working in partnership to develop new ways of approaching shared challenges and interests."

Kathy Edersheim, Chair of YaleGALE, said: "Working with Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø and sharing our experiences in alumni relations with the lively and engaged alumni and professionals at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø was a highlight of the YaleGALE programme in the UK. I look forward to continuing and expanding the relationship between our alumni organisations as well as our universities."

Professor Faith Wigzell, President of SSEES Alumni, said: "I really enjoyed meeting the Yale Alumni Leadership, sharing experiences and ideas on alumni activity. I found the day very useful in expanding my ideas on how to develop SSEES Alumni and will be looking at implementing some of the ideas discussed over the coming months."
