Although Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø's Deaf Awareness Training Day isn't until October 7th it's already all but a fully-booked success.

The aim of the event is to raise the profile of the deaf and the viability of British Sign Language (BSL) as a purposeful second language to the hearing community with lectures on signing and seminars on deaf awareness.

Robert Adam, himself deaf, is from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL) and one of the event's lecturers. He said: "We'd really like to encouraged more deaf people to be students or researchers at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø.

"The more people that learn BSL, the more people that can train to be interpreters, or become service providers who can provide services in sign language like teaching or social work.

"There is much potential for Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø to be able to provide BSL teaching and interpreter training. We have come a long way, but there is much we can do together."

Although the training sessions are now full you can hear Robert Adam's lecture on 'Working as a Deaf Researcher' in the William Haldane Room between 12.30-1.30pm.
