Following last spring's invitation for project proposals, five projects have been awarded funds from the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Research Challenges initiative.

The projects are based on five themes selected from suggestions and online discussions between people from across the whole Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø community. The themes - Sustainability, London, New Medical Technologies, Infections, and Communications & Access to Culture - were reached after all staff, students and alumni were invited to give their ideas about new areas of focus for Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø's research.

In the second phase of the scheme, project proposals were invited from the university's researchers, who could bid for a share of £50,000 of seed-funding. The awards are designed to kick-start innovative research projects that can later apply for fuller funding from academic research councils, industry, charitable trusts or other sources.

Professor Jo Wolff, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Philosophy, who chairs the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Research Challenges Board, said: "We were thrilled at the quality of the applications we received across all the selected research themes, and we're very excited to see how the projects we are supporting will develop."

Building on the success of the initiative, a second round of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Research Challenges will take place this academic year, during which everyone in the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø community will be able to put forward their ideas about the future of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø research.
