Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø

Today, on the 25th anniversary of his death, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Engineering celebrates the contribution to automotive engineering of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø alumnus Colin Chapman.

Chapman founded Lotus in the 1950s and was for years a driving force behind Formula One. His designs and technical innovations formed the basis for some of the most successful racing and sports cars ever made - and a range of Lotus cars are today on display in the main Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø quad.

Alongside the array of motor vehicles is an exhibition of original Lotus designs and photographs, which is on display in the cloisters. Held in partnership with Group Lotus, the event also recognises the research connections between Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø and Lotus Engineering. Among the guests are distinguished figures from the world of motor racing, including Damon Hill, Sir Stirling Moss and Patrick Head.

Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Communications spoke with Professor Bernard Buxton, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, and Professor Nicos Ladommatos, Head of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Mechanical Engineering, about today's event.

Professor Buxton spoke about the contribution of Colin Chapman to motorsport, while Professor Ladommatos explained the background to the work being done by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Mechanical Engineering in collaboration with automotive and oil companies to develop engines and fuels that are more efficient and better for the environment.
