The ceremony also included the unveiling of a plaque by Lord and Lady Wolfson, to mark the opening of the building's Wolfson Laboratories for Medical Physics & Bioengineering. Professor Malcolm Grant, President and Provost of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø, noted that this year was the 50th anniversary of the Wolfson Foundation, and their commitment to philanthropic investment in science, not least at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø, was to be celebrated. Lord Wolfson described the laboratories' research as "vital work".

The guests were briefed on the new facilities and ongoing research activity in the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Faculty of Engineering Sciences, including Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Computer Science's CAVE, an immersive virtual environment, the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Laser Laboratory, the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Centre for Medical Image Computing, the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Networks Research Group, the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Centre for Enterprise & Management of Innovation. They also saw poster presentations on human body modelling and shape analysis, naval architecture, imaging of neonatal brain activity and functional electrical stimulation technology used to enable people with spinal cord injuries to regain movement in paralysed regions.

Her Royal Highness unveiled a plaque marking the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Malet Place Engineering Building opening. She remarked that the staff and students in the building were clearly very active already, and that the proximity of groups working in different areas was fueling ideas and innovation.
