We are delighted to announce that CNIE PhD student Halan Mohamed won this year's AJV Underwood Prize "For the most promising research student who has been awarded a BEng/MEng degree as a student of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Chemical Engineering, and is now pursuing a research degree in the Department".
Another amazing Woman Engineer we could celebrate when we announced it recently on

For her PhD, Halan researches membranes with better anti-fouling properties, through polymeric brush structures inspired by the glycocalyx layer in the kidney. She also collaborates with recent NICE PhD graduate and Research Fellow Dr Nidhi Kapil to create surfaces that combat anti-microbial resistance (AMR), using a grant they obtained themselves.

This prestigious Departmental Award is named after former Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø Chemical Engineering lecturer AJV Underwood, of Underwood-Fenske fame in distillation. It is usually announced at our annual, festive Ramsay Society Dinner in February, for students, alumni, staff and friends of the department - but not in 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
