Description
A significant proportion of a young person’s life is spent in educational settings, at schools or inÌýcollege. There is increasing recognition that such settings are crucial environments for supporting theÌýmental health and wellbeing of young people, as well as for the identification of children andÌýadolescents who may be struggling with their mental health.
In this module we will delve into the way schools and other education contexts can manage andÌýsupport children and adolescent’s mental health, with a primary focus on trauma-informed care andÌýsupport within these contexts. You will learn about how childhood adversity and trauma might impactÌýa child’s mental health and development, and how this may present in an education context. You willÌýalso learn about specific prevention and intervention approaches for supporting child and adolescentÌýmental health within an education setting, and consider their evidence-base and applicability orÌýuseability within different education contexts. This will include a focus on whole-school approaches toÌýchild and adolescent mental health, through to more targeted approaches for children in need of support, including those experiencing adversity or trauma. The module will include a focus on theÌýstandard/typical education environment (i.e., school) and how approaches might differ acrossÌýdifferent ages and stages, as well as the needs of children in alternative education provisions,Ìýthrough to the first few years of further education.
