AIMS

The moduleÌýaims to provide a broad outline and general explanatory framework for current views of the sequence and processes of change which led from the introduction of farming to the metal producing societies of the Bronze Age in Europe.ÌýWe will discuss the different explanatory frameworks offered for the introduction and spread of the Neolithic economy and the formation of early stratified societies. The module will discuss the changing definitions of the Neolithic, look at the Mesolithic background, follow the introduction of farming in the Aegean, the Balkans, the Mediterranean, central and Northern Europe, the lake shore settlements of Central Europe, Megalithic monuments, the Tells of Southern Europe, the settlement of the steppe, the first metals, the inventions of charts and the Bell Beaker network.

OBJECTIVES

On successful completion of this course a student should:

• Have an overview of the general development of Neolithic societies in Europe and be familiar the key traits of material culture
• have a knowledge of current views, of the evidence and theoretical perspectives that lead people to hold them, and of why views differ.
• be able to arrive at their own critical judgments on current debates.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the course students should be able to have developed:

• The ability to read specialized literature in the light of a specific question
• The ability to put a text in the general framework of scholarly discussion
• critical reflection on the connection between theories and archaeological data
