Description

What is punishment? Who should be punished? Is the prison justified? What, if anything, justifies state criminal punishment at all? This advanced political philosophy module explores a range of normative questions about crime and punishment. Potential topics include normative theories of criminal punishment, techniques of criminal punishment, theories of criminalisation and their applications, and the normative principles underpinning proposals for reforming contemporary criminal justice systems.

Students should have taken at least two introductory political theory modules (such as POLS061 and POLS0064, or POLS006 and PHIL0007, or equivalent modules) prior to this module, as the module will build on foundational political theory knowledge. Students must engage effectively with the political theory studied through philosophical argument in this module in order to do well in their assessment.
