Description
This module is organized into a number of discrete seminar series, covering a range of topics important to psychoanalytic theory and technique. You will consider, for example, how current empirical evidence may be aligned with a psychoanalytic understanding of psychic development and the life of the mind, and you will also consider how essential topics such as trauma or sexuality can be understood through the lens of different psychoanalytic approaches. A series of seminars will bring a number of these issues together and invite you to consider the ways in which key psychoanalytic concepts have a bearing on contemporary clinical technique. The content of the module is theoretical in nature, but the majority of lecturers are experienced clinicians so the clinical context very much informs the theory throughout. The module is delivered by programme staff and guest lecturers, and is taught in a combination of lectures and seminars. Individual engagement with the material is essential and you will be expected to prepare for each seminar by reading one or two assigned paper-length texts on the topic. Please note that this is a compulsory module in the MSc Theoretical Psychoanalytic Studies programme and is only open to students in this programme.
