Description
This module introduces students to the sociology of race and ethnicity. It focuses on how race and ethnicity have been conceptualised over time putting them into historical and contemporary context. It explores how race and ethnicity intersect with other social structures such as gender, class and religion that affect advantages and disadvantages, inclusions and exclusions, and the ways individuals and groups challenge racialised and ethnicised inequalities. Through theoretical and empirical examples, the module examines understandings of race and ethnicity that shape and are shaped by institutions, social and cultural practices, and lived experience. It presents key debates and theories and offers students an opportunity to explore cutting edge research on racialisation, ethnicisation, racisms and belonging. The module offers students opportunities to make meaningful connections between theory and practice, developing their sociological knowledge and critical analytical skills.
