This module considers how social problems emerge and are defined as such, and the role and appropriateness of different approaches to intervening. In doing so, it maintains an international perspective. Course sessions will address issues such as:
- When can a phenomena be described as a 'social problem'?
- How are social problems constructed as such?
- The ethical and ideological implications of different approaches to intervening, (including a public health approach)
- Frameworks for describing how we think an intervention will work (theory of change)
- Factors to consider when deciding how to intervene
