Description
Science Communication for Biomedicine introduces you to the variety of approaches used for explaining complex scientific ideas in an accessible and informative way to a range of audiences. As a scientist, you develop the skills necessary to collect and analyse data. Equally important is your ability to inform others about the relevance of the research you undertake. This could be in the form of a presentation at a scientific conference or in a press release aimed at the general public. Effective communicators help to increase the public understanding of science and inspire others to engage with research.
Biomedical imaging is an ideal topic for learning how to communicate science, as highly complex technology is utilised to create an image understandable to all. The content of the teaching sessions and assessments will address this theme.
Guest speakers with extensive practical knowledge of biomedical research, scientific writing, journalism and public engagement will lead interactive sessions in topics such as:
- Science presenting and public speaking
- Journalism and popular science
- Creative writing and blogging
- Making science videos
- Art and science
You will be actively engaged in these teaching sessions, with the module team providing constructive feedback and advice. Assessments could include delivering a journal article slide presentation, producing a short video about an imaging technique or writing a newspaper article or blog post about a science exhibit.
On completion of this module, you will have developed skills for creating and delivering interesting scientific content across a range of media platforms.
