This module explores diverse perspectives and methodologies of the learning and teaching for disaster risk reduction within two broad international discourses. One is the interconnectedness of climate justice, sustainable development and disaster risk reduction, and the other is the growing necessity to live with disaster risk. The module reimagines ‘disaster education’ by taking critical stances to conventional ‘knowledge transmission models’ of learning and teaching. It treats ‘education’ broadly to encompass formal and informal, as well as lifelong and lifewide approaches. The focus tends to be on education for disasters in pre-disaster preparedness stages, although some sessions look at post-disaster stages. There will be inputs from guest lecturers, who propose emerging perspectives and undertake pioneering research in the field. Each session also includes a range of participatory activities.
