Description
The module aims to give students a solid understanding of the principles and practice of quantitative research methods. The emphasis is on the application of statistical models to large-scale datasets and the interpretation of the results. It builds on the first-year modules Introduction to Social Science Research and Discovering Qualitative and Quantitative Methods. During the first six weeks, the module introduces the principles and practice of data handling, a review of probability and statistics, comparison of two groups with t- and non-parametric tests, comparison of multiple groups with ANOVA/ANCOVA, and measures of association. The last four weeks treat the regression framework which is a generalization of the methods discussed in the first six weeks. Within the regression framework, the analysis of binary outcomes is also discussed (i.e., logistic regression). Through weekly tutorials, students gain hands-on experience with the data analysis software (SPSS) and of applying quantitative methods to real-world datasets.Ìý
