Description

Students in the fourth year of our MSci programme spend the whole year working in a research laboratory within the department. A range of project titles are offered by SMB staff in areas that complement the taught material in the Molecular Biosciences degree programmes. Under supervision, students will carry out original experimental, modelling, bioinformatic or analysis work over terms 1 and 2.

Delivery will be through laboratory or computational work and discussions with supervisor and other members of the host laboratory. Lectures/seminars/lab meetings and workshops will be used to give general advice on experimental design, time management, analysis of results, report writing and preparation for presentations. Students will maintain detailed records of their experiments and use these to prepare a comprehensive report of all their research (materials, methods and results) in the style of a paper from the Journal of Biological Chemistry.

BIOC0024 is assessed via a grant proposal exercise where students will be asked to consider the background to their project, the hypothesis and aims, experimental design and expected outcomes and benefits.
