Description
The ability to engage in a practical and theoretical sense with issues in social media, virtual worlds and other online spaces, is a key task for many professionals, from teachers, youth-workers and lecturers to a range of other occupations. The participatory web, as it has been described in the past, is also a rich area of theoretical debate, of interest to students and academics in digital media, cultural studies and new technology. This module will introduce you to theories of Internet cultures through practical engagement with blogging and other online spaces and allow you to investigate critically the arguments around their role in formal and informal learning. Considering that the Internet is all pervasive in our experience of the world, personally, professionally and in our learning lives, a 10-week module cannot engage with every aspect of it. Instead, this module works by requiring students to focus on two key tasks:Ìý
- creating an online presence over the 10 weeks, by designing and maintaining a blog on a topic of your own choosing; and
- exploring four key themes in recent research into Internet Cultures alongside the practical activity. These themes are:Ìý(1) Social Media, Identity and Curation; (2) Learning and Digital Media and Technology; (3) Reconceptualising Literacies; and (4) Civic Engagement.
