Description
Individual, Social and Cultural Perspectives in Health Psychology鈥� is a module module is designed to increase students鈥� understanding of concepts and issues related to individual, social and cultural perspectives of health. This module will look at how psychologists and epidemiologists have investigated the role of social background (e.g., socioeconomic circumstances, ethnicity, and disability) as well as individual differences (e.g., intelligence and personality) on health outcomes (e.g., mental and physical well-being). In addition, the module will also outline other influences on health behaviours and outcomes ranging from genetics, emotions to socially defined influences such as social norms and support.
By the end of this module students will be able to:
- Critically appraise literature on any of the topics taught as part of the module including developmental concepts and theories in relation to lifespan changes in health
- Show an appreciation of the effect of individual differences, ethnicity, gender, culture and class on the psychology of health and health care
- 听Demonstrate an understanding of non-psychology disciplinary approaches to health (e.g., epidemiology)
This module is compulsory for all students enrolled on the MSc Health Psychology. Spaces are limited to 60.
Teaching will take place in the form of lectures.
