Description

This module explores the emerging sector of social entrepreneurship and impact finance, and how impact is measured in practice. It will consider how enterprise activity and investment can play an important role in helping to address some of the world’s most challenging social and environmental needs. The class will comprise a mixture of lectures, guess speakers and case study discussions. In Part 1, the module will explore the drivers of impact business models delivered by social entrepreneurs and how value is created for the benefit of people and the planet. In Part 2, it will focus on the development of impact investment philosophies and strategies and their delivery through the investment lifecycle across asset classes such as equity, debt and specialist investment product. In Part 3, the module will delve into approaches and challenges to measuring and managing impact in practice for different types of enterprises and investments.

On completion of the module students will be able to:
• demonstrate knowledge of investment structuring and income streams;
• measure and assess the impact and key risks associated with social enterprise;
• demonstrate a critical understanding of impact investment measures and performance;
• analyse issues underlying business and value creation and development;
• demonstrate an awareness of the challenges around defining and measuring social impact;
• identify, debate and reconcile conflicts between financial and social returns;
• communicate and justify decisions.
