Description
This module considers the fundamentals of separations in the recovery of products from bioprocess feed streams. It focuses on the early stages of recovery where the processing stream is very complicated and challenging to process. The objective is to provide a theoretical understanding of downstream processes to enable the specification and operation of equipment and definition of performance.
Upon completion of the course, a student should be able to:
- Understand the impact of key variables in the primary recovery steps such as centrifugation and microfiltration
- Predict downstream operation performance
- Design a range of downstream steps for product recovery
- Use ultra-scale down devices to evaluate process performance
- Understand the impact of downstream processes on subsequent purification steps
