Description
This module aims to give students a broad introductory knowledge of some common, important neurological pathologies and of the role of Neuroimaging in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of these conditions. The module focuses in particular on Tumours, Epilepsy, Trauma, Paediatric Neuroradiology and Artificial Intelligence in Neuroradiology.
At the end of this module, students will be able to…
1. Tumours (C3Tu)
1.01:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýDescribe and explain the clinical presentation of tumours in terms of the disruption caused to function within the nervous system
1.02:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýList the most frequent extra-axial tumours
1.03:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýName congenital conditions associated with extra-axial tumours
1.04:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýName the most frequent intra-axial tumours
1.05:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýDemonstrate an understanding of the biological mechanism of glial cell tumours.
1.06:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýIdentify and differentiate intrinsic low and high-grade, extrinsic, pituitary, orbital, spinal tumours
1.07:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýDescribe the role of fMRI for surgery planning and post-op follow-up.
2. Epilepsy (C3E)
2.01:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýDescribe and explain the clinical presentation of tumours in terms of the disruption caused to function within the nervous system
2.02:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýDemonstrate familiarity with the clinical form of epilepsy, including the ability to list and describe the significance of a number of neuroradiological findings encountered in patient with epilepsy such as hippocampal sclerosis, cortical heterotopia, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), cavernomas, benign and malignant brain tumours
2.03:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýDescribe the role of imaging in the standard clinical setup.
2.04:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýOutline the role of special techniques such as Volumetry, DTI, perfusion, MT, qMT, and spectroscopy for surgery planning and post-op imaging.
3. Trauma (C3Tr)
3.01:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýDemonstrate familiarity with the epidemiology & life expectancy associated with head trauma
3.02:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýDescribe the clinical consequences, management & treatment of head traumas of different severity
3.03:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýList several common mechanisms and patterns of injury in both the head and spine and suggest appropriate imaging techniques which are most useful for different types of trauma
4. Paediatric Neuroimaging (C3PN)
4.01:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýIdentify the main challenges and requirements in Paediatric Neuroradiology
5. Artificial Intelligence in Neuroradiology (C3AIN)
5.01:ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýIdentify and outline the uses of Artificial Intelligence in the Neuroradiology of Tumour and Epilepsy
