Description
The module aims to provide understanding as to how to specify and recommend bioprocess options and upgrades, whilst being aware of the sensitivity of the overall costs required to implement changes in key process parameters. The module focuses on how to specify a flowsheet and the constituent unit operations for a complex bioprocess example and determine its economic feasibility. The use of engineering tools such as process flowsheets and mass balances together with economic analyses to recommend new processes are demonstrated.
Upon completion of the course, a student should be able to:
- Specify a major item of process equipment
- Interpret engineering drawings used in equipment procurement
- Perform economic analyses of the process and determine sensitivities to process changes
- Evaluate cost effectiveness under different scenarios
- Recommend a process that is technically feasible and economically viable
- Determine the types of data needed to specify unit operations and processes
- Develop process flowsheets and mass balances
