Energy Saving

Each year, powering, lighting, heating, and cooling Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø 200+ buildings produce over 50,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and costs £16 million in energy. In 2021/2022 the Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering department produced over 100 tonnes of CO2, which was a 40% decrease from the previous year.

Detailed information of Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø buildings or department’s carbon emissions in real time can be seen on our new platform. To gain access please access the using Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø_Energy_Data as username and password.

To continue to combat energy usage, the department follows Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø’s Heating, Cooling and Ventilation Policy, working towards a ‘Silver’ Green Impact award by 22/23, with an aim of being ‘Gold’ by 23/24. This is also to help improve our environmental impact in our offices, including how we manage energy usage.

Another way to combat spiralling energy costs is by reducing our energy wastage over Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø’s closure periods. It is a fantastic opportunity for people across the whole department to get involved and save energy by switching off their devices during the Christmas and easter periods. Over the 2020 Christmas period, the Switch Off helped Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø save 147 tonnes of carbon through switching off items that would have otherwise been left running. That is equivalent to planting 2,425 trees. It also saved Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø a tree-mendous £88,441!
