The ‘Supporting LGBT+ and Queer Histories in Secondary Schools’ project is led by Bob Mills (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø History of Art) and Rebecca Jennings (Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²ÊÖÐÌØÍø History). It aims to facilitate the teaching of LGBT+ and queer histories in ways which ‘usualise’ queer and LGBT+ experiences for students and expose them to the diversity of concepts of gender and sexuality across different historical periods and contexts, as part of the year-round curriculum. In a series of workshops earlier this year, secondary history teachers and academics working on LGBT+ and queer history came together to identify the current obstacles to incorporating LGBT+ and queer histories into the year-round history curriculum and understand what resources and other practical assistance teachers need to support their delivery of these histories to KS3 and 4 pupils. Building on these discussions, a small group of volunteer teachers and academics worked in July and August 2023 to produce some sample teaching materials for trial by teachers. 

This launch event is an opportunity to hear from Bob and Rebecca about the aims and findings of the project as well as learn about the teaching materials that have been developed.
