Biography

London merchant an ship-owner, naturalised in 1752, and consignee of 50 hogsheads of sugar p.a. under the will of Lewis Brotherson sen. (q.v.).

  1. Will of Francis Degen of [Hammersmith] Fulham merchant proved 10/10/1783. He left his property in trust (his trustees included William Manning sen.) to provide the interest on 拢6000, the income on 拢1000 with the Royal Exchange Assurance and further 拢36 p.a. from consols, together with his small house in Hammersmith for life, to Katherine Foljambe, then living with him. He left his large house on The Mall Hammersmith and 拢8000 to William Manning jun. when he reached 21. In a codicil he willed his share in three ships to their respective captains, Capt. John Calfe, Capt. James Blair and Capt. Richard Livermore.
