Biography

Slave-owner on St Kitts, but dying of Shephall Hertfordshire. Probably the son or nephew of Samuel Crooke shown on Samuel Baker's map of 1753 as owner of an estate in St Mary in St Kitts.

  1. Will of Samuel Crooke of [Sheephallbury] Sheephall [sic] Hertfordshire proved 08/11/1799. He left to his housekeeper Eleanor Randall for her long service annuity of 拢87 10s p.a. which with the interest from a bond of 拢250 would give her a clear annual income of 拢100 p.a. He left his daughter Mary Godfrey wife of Rev. Philip Godfrey of Aston Herts. the interest on 拢3000 for life with the principal to her children. He left his 'son or reputed son' Samuel Randall commonly called Samuel Crooke 拢5000 at 21, and 拢3000 to the latter's sister Charlotte Randall commonly called Charlotte Crooke, daughter of Eleanor Randall. He left 拢1000 to Catherine Moore daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Moore deceased. He left his brother Milward Crooke of St Kitts administrator of the estate of his mother all his [the testator's] right and interest in that estate, and 拢400. He instructed his executors to call in the 拢20,000 currency mortgage plus 拢1600 arrears (less 拢200 received by Dr Hart's bill on Henry Rawlins) [the mortgagor is not named but by inference was Dr Hart), and William Crooke's bill for 拢940 due in 1800. [There was no residuary legatee].
