London merchant, partner in Phyn, Inglis Ellice with John Inglis and Alexander Ellice (each of whom q.v.). The three men borrowed £5,000 under the Exchequer Loans to planters and merchants in Grenada and St Vincent in 1797.

1. Will of James Phyn of [Surrey Street in the Strand at present residing in Brighton] proved 19/12/1800. After leaving to his wife Erreta [sp?] an annuity of £1000 p.a., a £500 lump-sum and his households goods, and to his son George Phyn £6000, he divided his residuary estate between his three children, George, James and Catherine. He asked that the liquidation of his affairs be handed by his partner John Inglis. The will made no reference to real estate or to 'slave-property.'
