Biography

West India merchant, partner in Maitland and Boddington with Benjamin Boddington merchant of London (q.v.).

  1. Will of Richard Maitland of Allhallows Staining, City of London proved 24/05/1775. After the discharge of the first debts from the moneys to be received from 'my effects in the West Indies', he left 拢1000 to Daniel Mathew and 拢1000 to Edward Mathew 'towards his scheme of breeding up his son Brownlow a merchant.' He left 拢10,000 in trust to the Principall, Professors and Regents of Marshall [sic] College of Aberdeen to be invested in 3% consols and then to be laid out in lands in England or ground rents in London; from the income, he specified that 拢150 p.a. be used to support two students who had reached the MA level to remain as the Assistants of the Professors of Applied Mathematics and Experimental Philosophy. In a codicil he revoked this legacy without explanation. His residuary heir was his son Thomas. Administration was later granted to Brownlow Mathew.

The mortgage was held by successor partnerships who in 1799 agreed that it be discharged by Bryan Edwards' London firm over the following 5 years. Edwards however died in 1802 and his firm was dissolved.

By a deed of 10/05/1760, William Young then of Standlynch mortgaged an estate near Body Ponds on Antigua and 333 acres of the Old Road estate to secure 拢7000 to Richard Maitland, Thomas Boddington and Benjamin Boddington. The mortgage grew and passed through the successive iterations of the Boddington firm until 1799.

1770 [EA] - 1774 [LA] → Mortgage Holder

Pembroke was added to the security package for Maitland and Boddingtons in 1770 when the firm was owed 拢61,690 by Sir William Young, and released in 1774, when the mortgage debt had been cut to 拢38,411 7s 1d.
