Biography

Wife (and first cousin) of Charles Long of Saxmundham, from whom she inherited a life interest in Norbrook in Jamaica as tenant-in-tail behind her brother-in-law Dudley Long North. The compensation for the enslaved people on Norbrook was paid to Henry Lawes Long, as 'heir-at-law of [and?] surviving trustee of Charles Long.'

  1. Will of Jane Long widow of [Lower Grosvenor Street] St George Hanover Square [made 31/01/1821] proved 25/09/1834. In the will she rehearsed her marriage settlement with Charles Long of Saxmundham, which gave her a life interest in the Suffolk estates, and under which she was entitled to raise 拢6000 against the estates and leave it as she saw fit. Accordingly she left 拢1500 to her brother Sir Charles Long and 拢1000 to Lady Amelia his wife, 拢1500 to her brother Rev. William Long, 拢1000 to the three daughters of her late brother Beeston Long [sen.], and 拢1000 to Charlotte Spicer wife of Henry Spicer Esq. From her personalty she left a further 拢3500 to each of her brothers Sir Charles Long and Rev. William Long, and a further 拢2000 or so in monetary legacies to godchildren etc. Her residual heir was Rev. William Long. In a codicil of 1824 she made further smaller monetary legacies.
