Aretas Akers I

???? - 1785

Biography

Will of Aretas Akers [formerly of St Christopher, for some time of Lille in Flanders but now lodging at the Hotel D'Angleterre] of Brussels Brabant proved 26/05/1785. Recognising it might take some time to settle his affairs in the West Indies he placed all his property in trust, to pay annuities of 拢100 p.a. to his sons, to settle 拢4200 he was owed by Robert Douglas and Thomas and Philip Wilson of Tobago on his daughter Isabella, to settle 拢2000 and 拢100 p.a. owed by Robert Douglas on his youngest son Robert Akers, and to divide his residual estate into 6 parts, two of which were to go to oldest son and 1/6th to each of his other four sons. Administration of this will was granted in 1828 to Edmund Fleming Akers' widow Catherine, who had survived all her brothers-in-law.

Vere Langford Oliver in Caribbeana Vol. IV shows P.M. Mills selling Olivees to James Akers the elder (p. 98) and to Aretas Akers for 拢16,800 (p. 99), in both cases in 1782. Given its descent to Edmund Fleming Akers, it is reasonable to infer the purchaser was Aretas Akers.
