Biography

'John Allen' filed Crop Accounts for Crawle estate (St Thomas-in-the-Vale, Jamaica), Berwick estate (St Thomas-in-the-Vale, Jamaica) and Charlemont (St Thomas-in-the-Vale, Jamaica) in 1772, all owned by Sir Alexander Grant (q.v.). Allen's specific role is not listed.

'John Allan' [also given as John Allen] was listed in the Crop Accounts as mortgagee in possession of Paradise Pen (Westmoreland, Jamaica) 1782-1784. John Wedderburn was named as attorney and later purchased the pen.

  1. Administration of the will of John Allan merchant of [Kingston but now residing at Bristol] [made in 1796] was granted 07/03/1828 to James Allan, the son of George Allan brother and co-residuary heir of John Allan [when John Allan was shown as late of St George the Martyr, Southwark]. In the will John Allan provided for his natural children, Jane [then in England for her education] and John (the children of Jane McDonald of Kingston, a free woman of colour) and Betsy Allan, leaving them respectively 拢1000, 拢500 and 拢200. He left his residuary estate among his brothers and sisters, but in a codicil excluded his brother David Allan if the latter's income from his own property should be above 拢250 p.a.

  2. Given the address in the grant of administration, this was possibly the John Allan who was buried aged 64 10/10/1816, 'late prisoner within the rules of the King's Bench', at St George the Martyr, Southwark.
